CHEMISTRY (BL-CHEM-IUBLA)

Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Designs and oversees construction of state-of-the-art electronic research instrumentation.
- Consults with faculty, students and staff on unique engineering solutions to research problems.
- Provides technical support to instrument users; identifies and repairs high-level problems; installs instrument related hardware and software, including custom-built systems.
- Develops project objectives, budgets, work plans and implementation strategies.
- Designs electronics for state-of-the-art research instrumentation, by means of schematics, layouts and control systems.
- Repairs, tests and adjusts instrumentation to ensure that they are in optimal working order. This includes high-level repairs with reverse engineering. This also includes communication with customers, such as educating on the safe handling of devices and explaining the problems and solutions.
- Assists faculty, students, and staff with the implementation of instrumentation, including hardware and software.
- Consults with faculty, students, and staff on design, construction, and application of research instrumentation.
- Achieves project timeline and budget by defining project specifications and coordinating resources.
- Collaborates with co-workers, management, faculty, students and staff to support the research objectives of the University. Regularly communicates with management and co-workers regarding timelines, scheduling and project status to make effective use of team resources and maximum use of the diverse talents of team members.
- Maintains documents and disseminates information on current technology within the Department and the Bloomington campus.
General Responsibilities
- Designs and constructs electronics and/or electronic systems in support of research experiments (such as intricate analog and digital circuitries).
- Provides estimates for labor and material costs associated with system design and construction; oversees the construction and installation of systems; participates in proposals for future construction projects; develops project objectives, budgets, work plans and implementation strategies.
- Consults with faculty, staff, and students on problems associated with design and construction of research instrumentation as well as research systems programming.
- Repairs, tests and adjusts instrumentation to ensure optimal working order, including performing high-level repairs with extended reversed engineering; communicates with users, such as instructing on the safe handling of the device in question and explaining the problems and solutions.
- Collaborates with co-workers, management, faculty, staff, and students to execute highly coordinated instrumentation development to support research objectives.
- Maintains and prepares documentation for electronics and/or electronic systems and improves the performance of existing research systems.
- Develops technical documentation for electronics as needed and may assist faculty and/or students with research publications.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education. EDUCATION
Required - Bachelor's degree (preferably in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or related field)
Required WORK EXPERIENCE
- 2 years electronics design or related experience
Preferred - 1 year of experience in printed circuit board layout. Some experience in electronic repair/modification and/or control systems

- Ability to work collaboratively with others across the organization to achieve shared objectives, and training people when needed
- Ability to handle multiple priorities

- Experience with smart systems such as human machine interfaces (HMI), programmable automation controllers (PAC)
- Experience and knowledge in power dissipation, RF signals and optical components
- Understanding of vacuum systems, interlock systems and temperatures control systems
- Experience with mechanical CAD software
- Basic understanding of instrumentation commonly used in chemical sciences
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
The position requires a considerable amount of mental effort to design complex systems, novel circuits and absorb new information quickly. It requires the ability to sit at a computer for prolonged periods. Although the position does not require strenuous physical effort, it does require the ability to visit research laboratories and provide support for the instrumentation situated in that environment.

$82,000.00 - $85,000.00/ annual salary
