The Human Factors Engineer – UX/UI Engineer provides leadership in the design, evaluation, and validation of user-centered interfaces and human-system integration for FAA applications and systems. This role ensures that application interfaces and systems are operationally sound, human-centered, and aligned with FAA safety, performance, and usability standards. The position requires expertise in human cognition, experimental design, user experience design, and ergonomics to optimize human performance and reduce risks in mission-critical environments.
Lead the design and evaluation of user interfaces (UI/UX) to ensure applications are intuitive, accessible, and operationally effective.
Conduct studies in human–machine interaction, human performance assessment, and equipment/facilities/environmental design.
Develop and execute human factors experiments, usability testing, and behavioral data collection, ensuring robust analysis and actionable recommendations.
Oversee data analysis and statistical modeling of human performance, reaction time, workload, and attention allocation.
Lead the preparation of project deliverables, technical reports, and documentation supporting system validation and FAA requirements.
Participate in project planning, management, and stakeholder engagement to align human factors activities with organizational goals.
Provide expert input into system design, integration, and lifecycle management, including defining human factors requirements and generating qualification evidence.
Support rapid prototyping, concept development, user testing, and iterative design improvements.
Contribute to organizational performance initiatives, including human workload analysis, situational awareness, human reliability assessments, and cultural interventions.
Serve as a subject-matter expert in human cognition, ergonomics, usability, and human-system integration, supporting FAA mission-critical systems.
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive Psychology, or related discipline.
12–15 years of relevant experience with a BS/BA.
10–13 years with a MS/MA.
7–10 years with a PhD.
Deep knowledge of human cognition (visual perception, attention allocation, reaction time, serial/parallel processing).
Demonstrated expertise in experimental design, statistical analysis, and usability testing methods.
Proven experience with human factors integration, system lifecycle participation, and requirements definition.
U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Experience designing mission-critical aviation or aerospace user interfaces.
Familiarity with FAA human factors standards, operational guidelines, and regulatory frameworks.
Proficiency with UX/UI prototyping tools and human factors simulation/testing environments.
Experience in cross-functional project management, coordinating with engineers, developers, and operational staff.
Strong communication skills with the ability to brief leadership, write technical reports, and present findings.

Target Salary Range: $135,000 - $216,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
